The oldest ski resort

Sofia province is located in the eastern part of the country, surrounding most of the capital of Sofia. The region is bordered by Serbia to the northwest.


The terrain of the region is mostly hilly. The highest point of the Balkans is the Musala peak of the Rila mountain.


Borovets is the oldest mountain resort in Bulgaria, dating back to the 19th century. It is located near the town of Samokov, and was originally built as a hunting place for the Bulgarian kings. Borovets is one of the most popular ski resorts in the country.


Some of the sights of the region are the Petlyuka fortress, the oldest memorial to soldiers in Bulgaria, the ancient temple Garvan Kamak, and Borovets fortress.
